One Rate for as Long as You Keep the Company

Fair warning about who is talking. Colorado Registered Agent.co publishes this page, we charge $99 a year, and one of the two services compared here is ours. The ZenBusiness numbers are lifted straight from their own pricing, because inventing competitor prices would be both dishonest and pointless when the real ones make the argument.

What ZenBusiness Does Well

Their software. Genuinely, and without qualification: the ZenBusiness dashboard is the best-looking thing in this category, formation and compliance and agent mail all sit in one tidy place, and using it feels like using a product rather than filling in a government form. Plenty of owners want that hub, and if the agent appointment is simply one line item inside a wider admin tool you intend to live in, buying it there makes sense.

Then Look at the Second Invoice

As a standalone purchase, ZenBusiness advertises agent service at $99 plus state fees for the opening term. Renewals run $199 a year.

Both figures are published and neither is a trick. They just describe different things. The $99 describes an introduction. The $199 describes the relationship, because Colorado requires an agent on file for the entire life of the entity and there is no version of that life where the renewal price stops applying.

The phrase attached to the opening figure deserves a glance as well. "Plus state fees" means the total charged depends on which filings travel with the order, so the advertised amount and the amount debited are two different numbers.

Two hundred dollars over three years, and the work behind both columns is word for word the same work.

The Statute Does Not Care Which One You Pick

Colo. Rev. Stat. § 7-90-701 sets a short list of who may serve: an adult whose home or usual workplace is inside Colorado, a domestic entity in good standing that keeps a place of business here, or a foreign entity registered to do business in the state and likewise in good standing. Consent is required from whoever takes the role. One appointment the statute rules out entirely is the Secretary of State, so pointing the job back at the agency is not an option.

ZenBusiness qualifies. So do we. Since the law treats both of us identically, the decision comes down to what the service costs across the years you will actually own the company, and to how fast a lawsuit reaches you.

Where the $99 Goes

Every document that reaches our Colorado office is scanned and emailed the same day it arrives, which is the part of this business we care most about getting right. The public record then shows our Colorado street address where yours would otherwise sit. Periodic report reminders land before the window opens rather than after it shuts. The order form is the last screen: no upgrade tiers wait behind it. One optional charge exists, $15 for each piece of non-legal mail you want scanned, and it is printed here rather than revealed later.

One qualifier travels with that figure. BetterLegal advertises $90 a year, so $99 belongs among the lowest published Colorado rates rather than at the very bottom of them.

Moving Off ZenBusiness: What Colorado Asks For

Ten dollars, one filing, and a few minutes at a keyboard.

Colorado's name for the paperwork is a Statement of Change, and § 7-90-305.5 of the state statutes supplies the authority behind it. There is no form number and nothing to print, since these submissions are accepted in exactly one place, the Secretary of State's business filing system. The $10 charge appears on the official fee schedule. Retrieve your entity record, open the statement, supply the incoming agent's details together with their Colorado street address, settle the ten dollars, and file. Acceptance makes the change effective.

The ordering matters. Colorado treats that statement as an affirmation that your incoming agent has agreed to serve, so the successor needs to be engaged before you start typing rather than once the form is in. Sign up, file, watch for the amended agent name in the public entity search, and cancel the ZenBusiness plan last of all. Run that way, the appointment is held continuously and no window opens in which your company has nobody in the role.
